Latics Wages late again??

Started by: GOLDEN BEAR (6569)

I see that Wigan Athletics players have had to wait YET AGAIN for their wages ,this is just not on after the debacle of having 3 points deducted here we are again !!! I know it's only one match left of the season BUT do you think that the EFL could bring charges against the club again???? If they do we could possibly kick -off next season with a deduction of points ??? I feel utterly sorry & angry & annoyed for this club being brought into disrepute yet again ,what do you think about it WW s ...........G.B.

I had high hopes when the Club was bought, and the new owners were making all the right noises. My worry now is what will happen after the last game has been played. They have apparently only paid the players whose contracts extend beyond the end of this season. Are the owners' intentions honourable ? Will they decide to do one. Will we start next season on minus points ? Will the A word come into play again ?? Any way you look at it, NOT GOOD...........

Well obviously the best thing is for Wigan Athletic to have a new owner, because at this rate of things, they will fall through League 1 next season, and then League 2 the one after, and then it is back from whence they came in 1978

After watching the BBC programme about what happened with Wrexham FC when the club was bought by a person only interested in selling their ground for property development, could we in Wigan now have the same situation with the DW Stadium if moves are not made to safeguard its future by putting it into a trust like now exists at Wrexham and also the nearby University of Bolton Stadium.

When Whelan retired, the Stadium should have been donated to the town and people of Wigan by putting it into a trust and not just transferred it from his Whelco Holdings business to Wigan Athletic as that put the position of the Stadium into a possible situation like that of Wrexham especially with a foreign football owner who had been given the misled idea that Wigan was a big football town because of having been the Premiership and winning the FA Cup.

Thank you Mr Whelan, enjoy your retirement in Barbados!

p.s. And now that Whelan no longer owns it, why has it still got to be called the DW Stadium and not the Robin Park Stadium?

Council have to agree to a sale of the stadium, and in the las administration several parties wanted to buy the stadium as part of a deal to buy the club, but the council refused it, but I can see the council buying the stadium themselves and then demolishing it, and getting the Chinese to pay for the construction of high rise flats on the site, just like what they have done with The Galleries

Bravo Owd Codger ,I agree with you whole-heartedly on the comments you have written, you mention that when Whelan stood down he should have donated it to the TOWNSHIP OF WIGAN well dear friend we all know that the answer to that is ,,, WHELAN WOULD NOT GIVE YOU THE SNOT FROM HIS NOSE !!!
As for the re-naming of the stadium i think that's a Brilliant idea /suggestion and wonder what would it take to get that of the ground ie A POLL ,A PETITION OR WHAT??? Anyone any idea's i would be all for it !
AS for mi owd mucker TTS spot on again as usual that is exactly what this rotten Wigan Clown Council would do if they got their nasty grubby mits on it !!! G.B.

The Owner and Chairman need to face the fans and answer the questions. The EFL will be asking questions this week and will want answers too. The monies need to be paid, some players played on Monday even though they had yet to be paid. Some chose not to. The wagebill will come down when the out of contract players leave the Club and there are quite a few. The Academy will come to the rescue next season with many lads getting a start in the first team. I personally think our starting keeper is sorted with Sam Tickle having an excellent game Monday. We need assurances about monies and structures going forward. I'm not sure the owner wants a football team anymore though. Hopefully we will START next season, and not be -12 points from the get go.

A great deal of the blame for the ongoing mess involving Wigan Athletic lies with Wigan Council in the way that they allowed Whelan to have control of the Stadium instead of doing the same as in Huddersfield, Hull etc where their Stadiums are managed by a independent company with both clubs as tenants.

The finances of Wigan Athletic are not big enough to finance the maintenance and any improvements to a 25,000 capacity Stadium and the Council should have realised this instead of going along in a misled belief that Wigan was going to become a big football town like in other Lancashire towns.

In fact, the capacity of the stadium should never had been more than 20,000 which is sufficient for the attendances of both clubs.

If we are to put the Latics woes to one side for a minute, the Stadium is an interesting one. When Tesco bought Central Park, and Springfield Park was sold for housing, both Teams strongly opposed a move, and definitely a shared one. The Rugby even touted a move to the Reebok to be the tenants of Bolton Wanderers, sworn evil neighbors of the Latics. Thats how bad it was. The truth was both stadia were well past their sell-by dates and required more money than was sensible to spend ( even if it was available ) to bring them up to safety and capacity regs. So putting the history of both grounds aside, a new Stadium was the way forward. I'm not sure who came up with 25k as a capacity but I suppose building it at say 15k then finding out it wasn't big enough probably wasn't a good idea either. I remember Addidas and JJB being involved in covering some of the cost and I think the council did the rest. I stand to be corrected though. Nowadays, taking aside Wigan v Saints, A big name FA Cup draw, Man City etc, World Club Challenges and possible Rugby World Cup matches, the ground is rarely anywhere near full. It's still a good ground to visit and in good nick, as you'll see when you travel to some of the away games we get to. The big screen is a nice added bonus but I wish they'd put another on the SW corner too, we can't see it from the East Stand :) There probably won't be a full house on Sunday for the Legends game, but I hope for a good turn out, lot's of goals ( we haven't seen too many of those this season ) and some better news for the Latics going forward.

WN1 Standishgate

The cost of the Stadium was £35 million and was made up of various grants amounting to 66% (23.1m) a share by Wigan Council of 14% (4.9m) with only the remaining 20% (7.0m) coming from the pocket of Dave Whelan.

And the simple truth is that neither Wigan Athletic and also Wigan Warriors do not have the finance to own, manage and maintain the 25,000 capacity stadium, which has led to the financial mess of the Latics going into administration, dubious ownership and now heading down the same path again

OC,
35 million isn't a bad price for such a construction. Lets hope it lasts longer than the Galleries. Maybe they could multi use the Stadium, try to attract musical acts/concerts etc. They'd probably complain about the pitch getting damaged though. I seem to remember Addidas having a stake in it too with the brand name incorporated in the seats in the East stand. The Rugby are on an even keel with Ian Lenegan, the Latics haven't recovered from a certain Stanley Choi putting them into administration before the ink had dried on the contract. I hope Phoenix 2021 aren't cut from the same cloth.

The price was in the late nighties before building costs spiraled and for another few million more at the time, Wigan could have had a lower capacity Stadium of 20,000, but of better design and quality like many of the new Stadiums in other towns of similar size to Wigan.

The Stadium needs to be put into a trust in order not only to protect it from any possible future property development, but also to help the finances and future of the Latic's who simply not afford to manage, run and maintain it on their own and has had a lot to do with their continual financial problems.

In other words, what should have been done following the meetings at both clubs in 1994 when the idea of a joint stadium was first suggested with both clubs as tenants and the Stadium managed, run and maintained by an independent company or organisation.

Until it is done, the Latics will continue to have financial problems affecting the level of division or even the league they play in!

All outstanding wages paid yesterday with proof of funds to support the Club in the short term provided to the EFL. There now appears to be a cost saving exercise taking place with a re shuffle of staff . Cloth will be cut to suit pattern as the budget will be much lower than previous years. I'll be happy with a mid table finish next season, points deduction or not.
